Super Bowl XXII–Redskins 42 Broncos 10– revisited
It is now coming up on almost 20 years since the Redskins destroyed the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. It wasn`t just the fact that the 42-10 score shocked NFL fans everywhere at the time. It was a night that Doug Williams would make a name for himself, not because he was the first black athlete to start a Super Bowl, but for the way he led his Redskins back from an early 10-0 second quarter deficit. Williams who had to come out in the first quarter from a hyper-extended knee he suffered, came back in the second quarter like a rabid dog looking to bite someone. He threw 4 touchdowns in the second quarter to put his Redskins on top 28-10 at the half.
In that remarkable 2nd quarter, he first connected with Ricky Sanders on a 80-yard touchdown. Just 4 minutes later, he landed a 27-yard pass to receiver Gary Clark. Next, he threw a breath-taking 50-yard rope to Sanders once more. As if that wasn`t enough, he ended the half with a 8-yard hook-up to tight end Clint Didier. All of this in just one quarter by one arm, from a man who came from the USFL, that no one wanted. The Redskin defense was also one of the most dominate in Super Bowl history. It had 5 sacks that night led by Alvin Walton who finished with 2. The secondary also did it`s part, with 3 int`s, 2 by Barry Wilburn. But everyone knows that this night belonged to Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams.
